The Empire has gone through various degrees of literacy and capacity to print books in the past.
In the current era, most people are slightly literate, able to read a street sign or handle a contract; the churches provide what education children get that isn't from their parents or master (if apprenticed).
The Church and wizards have driven most advances in book technology, though the flourishing cities have as well.
Books are typically block-printed, as are weekly gazettes in the largest cities. Smaller cities may have a printer but you can't be sure. Some religious instituttions still produce hand-copied and illustrated manuscripts.
You can buy blank books for notes/appointments/etc. Devotional, scholarly, and arcane books are the most common.
In this age, a craze for 'Wind Novels' has broken out, works of fiction, with a mixture of comedy, romance, and adventure. They often come out a few times a year in a series of linked stories.
