Episode 3: The Stars Are Bright

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC You can invite Luke to come along if you feel you need another defender; otherwise, he will chat a bit with Vendrik and move on, looking for EVIL TO SMITE"

Akio says, "Dan, you fuckin'... invite budget odin along."

Akio says, "You invite him RIGHT NOW."

Niamh seems uninterested in the matter, instead getting out another stoppered jar and using a magical hand to milk venom from the stingers of the dead scorpions into it.

Kiara says, "OOC Kiara would vote for him coming along, but mainly because she's considering putting the moves on him later. :)"

Harrowhark sidles up to Niamh and inquires if Niamh's magical hand can get her some of that death venom.

Niamh is more than happy to take care of Harrowhawk's hand job.

Akio says, "AHAHAHAHA."

Vendrik shrugs. "You are welcome to tag along, yes? Many little things for squishing today." He ticks off on his fingers. "Baby ants, baby slimes, not so baby scorpio"

Tobias facepalms.

Luke says, "Killing things is more fun with friends! I warn you, there's some skeletons roaming around! I don't know why but their skulls can be thrown a long ways."

Harrowhark says, "Skulls are aerodynamic."

Vendrik laughs. "We have throwing skull contest then! I throw much farther than you!"

Luke says, "I agree! Sounds good to me!"

You sent out in search of spiders.

Kiara laughs. "That'll be fun to watch!"

Niamh gives Harrowhawk her Jar O Venom and tucks her own away in her pack.

The stars are coming out and the sun is setting, taking the edge of the heat. Crickets begain chirping everywhere all the time, and you see people leaving the fields for their homes.

Harrowhark says, "Thank you, Niamh."

More and more, you encounter high grass areas for grazing, instead of farmland.

Harrowhark says, "Are you prepared for skeletons? I am always prepared for skeletons."

Niamh says, "You are welcome."

Niamh says, "Undead can be aggravating, but happily most of my offensive dweomers affect them."

Harrowhark points off at an angle to their line of march, off to the northeast. "The unquiet dead shamble off that ways."

Kiara taps her hands together lightly. "I kinda like a dagger to the back of the skull."

Samantha says, "Great."

Luke says, "We should smite them, if we are ever to play the skull-throwing game!"

Niamh says, with interest, "How can you tell?"

Kiara looks up at their flying companion. "You good with our taking a little time off to smash skellies?"

DaR From Another Place says, "we should do recoveries and what not."

Voice of John Biles says, "Yes."

Tobias says, "Oh yeah."

Voice of John Biles says, "Vendrik is at 22 of 33. Niamh is 18 of 27. Kiara is 19 of 24. Harrow is 21 of 30. Samantha is at 15 of 24. Luke is at full"

Harrowhark says, "I am sensitive to the violation of the natural order that is necromantic power."

Tobias asks, "Remind me, Recovery is your class die + con bonus, yes?"

Harrowhark says, "It touches me deep inside."

Akio says, "Correct."

Voice of John Biles says, "Yes."

Mike says, "roll 1d6+3"

Result is: (1d6+3) 4 for Mike

Tobias sighs.

Kiara cracks her knuckles and does a deeeeep stretch with her arms up over her head, not incidentally showing off her chest to Luke.

Kiara says, "roll 1d8+2"

Akio asks, "You can just... use another one?"

Akio says, "You ought to have a big stack of recoveries left."

Voice of John Biles says, "You could burn a second if you want, Mike"

Vendrik spends 2 recoveries d10+3x2

Vendrik spends 1 more d10+3

Harrowhark, smugly, is at full and does not need to heal.

The bird twitters to Kiara and seems content if you want to go hit some skeletons.

Sniper Ox asks, "what are we doing?"

Voice of John Biles says, "Using your recoveries to heal. Samantha is at 15 out of 24 HP"

Kiara grins at the bird. "Thanks. Want some birdseed when this is all done?"

Sniper Ox asks, "uh, what's a class die?"

Voice of John Biles says, "So burning a recovery and rolling d8 + Con bonus would be good for her"

Tobias says, "The die your class rolls for recoveries."

The bird chirps merrily.

Sniper Ox asks, "what would that be john?"

Kiara tosses off a salute to the chirper.

Samantha says, "roll 1d8+2"

Result is: (1d8+2) 5 for Samantha

Tobias says, "A d8 for you, Rod."

You continue on, under the stars; a single star is moving across the sky. You dimly remember it from last night; it is flashing brighter and dimmer, on an arc where it seems unlikely to hit the ground. A tiny bit of its light breaks free and arches towards the ground to the northwest of you.

You pass several kids watching over sheep at night, all watching the odd flashing star, because there's not much else to do while sheep sleep.

Then, very, very faintly, you hear singing in the distance.

Akemi [to you]: It is clearly a marching song.

But no instruments.

Niamh asks, "Singing skeletons? Admitedly I have heard of such, in the 9th Age."

Vendrik holds up a hand. "Marching song."

Akio says, "Fuckin' Crowlight Star."

Vendrik says, "Very jolly skellingtons, if singing such songs."

Luke says, "A good song makes the miles go faster!"

Samantha says, "one of us should scout it"

Harrowhark draws up her hood and flexes her fingers, running through etudes in preparation.

Kiara grins at Samantha. "Rock-paper-scissors you for it?"

Samantha brings out a coin. "Why make it complicated?"

Samantha asks, "OOC 1 for heads 2 for tails d2? "

Samantha says, "call it."

Luke says, "The coin can't sc....oh, right."

Kiara says, "Heads!"

Tobias says, "o/~ Spooky scary skeletons o/~"

Samantha says, "roll d2"

Result is: (d2) 1 for Samantha

Samantha says, "Hn. All yours."

Kiara pumps her fist. "Yay!" She gives the others a wave, then goes off in SNEAKY MODE.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC DC 15 Dex check, adding a relevant background."

Kiara says, "roll 1d20+4+5"

Result is: (1d20+4+5) 11 for Kiara

So this is what happens from your perspective

You hear the singing get closer; you now see eight skeletons; three with bows, five with swords; one of the five is wearing a helm and the other swordsmen have scraps of armor on; the archers have rags of cloth. They're not coming straight at you, but rather, they are pursuing a rustling in the grass which is probably Kiara. They don't seem to have noticed you yet, being focused on her. Each of you can take a standard action, then we will go to normal rounds and roll init; Kiara and the skellies already rolled and the skellies got a lousy 8. The boss Skelly is 18/16/12. The other sword skellies are 17/15/11 and are mooks. The Archers are not Mooks and are 16/15/10. Kiara, you got shot earlier for 5, so you're down to 19 HP.

All foes are at Nearby range and there is no hit penalty

Akio asks, "Mike, do you have any hell AOE?"

Tobias says, "Not on round one I don't."

Frito says, "At least I hopefully got them in good position for you."

Akio says, "Okay. I got blessings to hand out."

Akio says, "Two (2) of you can receive a blessing from Harrow that chnges your damage type to Holy and ads 1d6 holy to all damage you do for the fight."

Akio says, "Holy also allows you to crit on 18+."

Akio asks, "I figure one of these should go to Niamh. Who for the second? Vendrik?"

DaR From Another Place says, "Probably better on one of the rogues."

Frito asks, "I'd suggest Vendrik and one of the rogues; doesn't Niamh have effective damage against the undead from her spells?"

Tobias says, "Hmm. Actually if skeletons resist edged weapons like they do in other editions, then yeah, it's better on the blade users than me."

Akio asks, "DO skeletrons resist edged weapons?"

Voice of John Biles says, "Niamh's spells don't do holy damage, but they will damage these things just fine as themselves"

Voice of John Biles says, "Skeletons normally don't have special resistances, but sometimes they may have funky powers. These guys seem pretty normal, though"

Frito says, "Actually, might be better if you bless Samantha instead of me; blessing me might draw their attention to you."

Tobias says, "Actually, the book ones say they resist weapons."

Voice of John Biles says, "OH."

Akio says, "If you're willing to forgo it, Mike, I'll put it on the rogues."

Voice of John Biles exclaims, "Right, then they do!"

Tobias says, "Yeah, put it on the rogues."

Voice of John Biles says, "Ahh, it's an all skeleton power, so I missed it"

Harrowhark calls down the power of Ravens onto Samantha and Kiara!

Kiara laughs, a bit out of breath. "CAW!"

Samantha mutters, "here we go."

Luke spits lightning at the helmet Skelly.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 15 for Manny Mo'Jac

The lightning narrowly misses to his frustration.

Vendrik bellows "SKULLS FOR THE THROWING" and charges into the middle of the swordsmen, engaging as many as he can.

Harrowhark says, "The Raven Queen does not caw! Stop making this -weird-."

Vendrik soon has four of the five swordsmen engaged with him; the one with the helm is clearly planning to rush Luke in revernge even if he didn't get hit.

Kiara says, "roll 1d20+4"

Result is: (1d20+4) 6 for Kiara

Tiny tendrils of smoke drift up from Kiara's position but nothing else happens.

DaR From Another Place says, "'bamf?' 'no bamf.'"

Manny Mo'Jac asks, "OOC Rod, what's Samantha going to do?"

Result is: (1d20+8) 28, crit for Mike

Frito says, "Ooh, nice."

Tobias says, "That sadly was not an attack."

Niamh makes a startled exclamation. "My goodness. These are military songs sung by the household troops of the original Archmage, back in the First Age!"

Sniper Ox asks, "so, what're my targets?"

Voice of John Biles says, "You could shoot at a swordsman (risks shooting Vendrik if you miss), their boss, or one of 3 archers."

Samantha gets out the crossbow and snipes at an archer

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Okay, roll to hit!"

Frito says, "Not always a good idea, Merc."

Samantha says, "roll 1d20+4"

Result is: (1d20+4) 6 for Samantha

The arrow flies high over the archer.

Sniper Ox says, "three of them. you can ignore the 2nd"

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Niamh!"

Tobias says, "Rod's voodoo curse continues."

Mike asks, "OOC: Are all of the sword types in melee?"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC The one with a Helmet clearly plans to rush Luke but hasn't gotten to go"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC THe other four are attacking Vendrik"

Niamh takes square aim at the helmed one with her staff. "Catastrophic Spell-Glacier of the Titanic Leviathan."

Mike says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 10 for Mike

Tobias sighs.

Sniper Ox says, "they're running around in lines"

The bolt misses him and freezes a tree in a tiny glacier.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Everyone roll Init, which is based on Dex + Level and d20"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Except Kiara, who already has an Init rating"

Mike says, "roll 1d20+3"

Akio asks, "Us humans get to roll twice and take the better result, right?"

Harrowhark holds out a hand at the helmed skeleton and gestures, a pulling motion; beams of purple energy leap out of him and into her hand. She gathers them into a ball and flicks them almost negligently at Kiara.

Niamh, looking peeved at her earlier miss, points her staff at the helmed skelly again. "Unerring Frost-Scalpel of Resolias the Precise, Mark 2," she intones.

Realizing it erred, it expires

Kiara! Then Luke, then your foes!

Niamh says, "I am filing a report with the Provost of the Black College for deceptive naming."

Kiara sneaks in and takes a stab at one of the skellies in combat with Vendrik!

Akio says, "It's not a spell per se; it was the blessing John awarded me for my Icon thing."

Tobias says, "Whatever."

Akio says, "So he gets to decide how it works."

Akio says, "Is my point."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC But also, you should add your dex to melee damage as a rogue"

Frito says, "Well, it's not like it mattered much on this roll anyway. ^^;;"

Kiara strikes down the first mook just barely.

Kiara catches the skull as it drops and tosses it!

Luke points at the boss. "YOU AND ME!" he shoutes, then activates Smite Evil and goes after him.

Vendrik is up and Harrowhawk should warm up on deck.

Vendrik hassles one of his foes but doesn't quite kill it.

Vendrik says, "Pull it Together Thunderballs!" (Recovery with an additional d4 healing)

Luke says, "I took the tough one!"

Vendrik exclaims, "Oh yes, weedy little crown very much armor. Stopping lightnining like boss!"

Harrowhark aims a bolt of deadly, deadly holy energy at the skeleton Vendrik almost killed.

Result is: (1d20+6) 12 (1d6+4) 7 for Harrowhark

Akio says, "Nerrrrrp."

Niamh is next and then it's time for the magical magic of Kiara

Nuno does a little dance on Niamh's shoulder; it could be constipation OR cheering for her. It's hard to tell.

Niamh, looking frustrated, stamps her foot and jabs her staff at the one Sam wounded. "Frozen Stare of the Dancing Yug-Sage Nygothya," she snaps, going back to a reliable standy-by.

Mike says, "roll 1d20+6"

Result is: (1d20+6) 21 for Mike

Mike says, "roll 3d6"

Result is: (3d6) 16 for Mike

Ice forms across it; it isn't quite dead but it stares fixedly at Niamh, ignoring Samantha now.

Kiara does the sneaky-sneak thing again against another of Vendrik's opponents!

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Roll!"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC You will get sneak attack damage, by the way, I just realized. I think we forgot that last time. If you hit"

Kiara says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 22 for Kiara

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Okay! Don't forget +1d6 for the blessing and your sneak attack damage"

Kiara says, "roll 1d8+1d6+1d4+4"

Result is: (1d8+1d6+1d4+4) 17 for Kiara

Sniper Ox says, "i'm seeing way too many ads for printing photos on glass. 'fracture' they call it. this seems like a terrible idea"

Kiara knocks off its head, which hits another head, which hits a third head and all the swordsmen are down save the one Luke is fighting.

Kiara grins, grabs the three skulls and tosses them one after the other. "That's four for me!"

Luke says, "It looks like the sexy little lady is best smiter today!" He burns his last Smite Evil

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll 1d20+9 1d12+1d8+5"

Result is: (1d12+1d8+5) 13 (1d20+9) 25 for Manny Mo'Jac

The boss vibrates and curses in first age speech.

Two archers fire at Niamh; one fires at Harrowhark.

All the arrows go awry.

Niamh smiles faintly, smugly.

Round 3. Escalation Die of 2, so +2 to hit for everyone. Samantha, you are up and Vendrik is on deck. Because your foe is hating on Niamh, you will also inflict sneak attack damage if you hit, Samantha

Samantha asks, "OOC on any target or the one targeting niamh?"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC On the one you've been shooting over and over."

DaR From Another Place asks, "Are the archers in a group or are they spread out?"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Who is now looking at Niamh"

Voice of John Biles says, "They are too spread out to engage all of them unless you manuever them into a clump0; you could try using a standard and an Intelligence + Background, DC 15 to do that"

Samantha shoots at the archer yet again, out of stubbornness.

One of the archers dies, pierced by a skillful shot.

Kiara says, "Woo! You go, girl!" She salutes Samantha.

Vendrik is next and Harrowhawk after him.

Frito exclaims, "Hark!"

Vendrik pivots and charges into the archers, trying to push the remaining two together d20+5.

Samantha grunts

Vendrik heards them into a clump, a clump engaged with him.

Harrowhark with Niamh on deck

Kiara says, "Hah! You set 'em up, we'll take 'em down, Vennie!"

Harrowhark picks an archer!

Result is: (1d20+7) 26 (1d6+4) 7 for Harrowhark

Akio says, "That's a crit."

Akio says, "I rolled higher than an 18."

Holy power fries the one that keeps shooting at her; it doesn't die but is now staggered.

Niamh, with Kiara on deck!

Mike says, "OOC: Who exactly is left, and who are they engaged with."

Akio says, "Cleric does it all; heals, buffs, casts spells..."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Two archers on Vendrik, Helm Boss on Luke"

Niamh briskly snaps her fingers, plants her staff in the ground with one hand, and then fans her fingers at the two archers with the other. "Maria Sunshine's Delightful Array of Bright Murder Colors," she intones softly.

Kiara mimes a skull-chattering-teeth look at Numo.

Numo makes his teeth chatter, then farts triumphantly.

Niamh says, "It must have been some greatly ancient barrow. Look! These blades are 1st Age work! The arrow points as well!"

Harrowhark says, "These skeletons were created by the First Archmage to guard the tomb of one of his apprentices, Lucinius," she pronounces the hard 'c' correctly, "who died fighting the Wizard-King."

Harrowhark says, "Most scholarship states that he was buried on the Moon."

Kiara laughs with Numo. "I like him."

Niamh looks surprised at the notion of someone liking Numo.

You can hear the distant sound of moving sheep and very far away, the faintest sound of the church bells of Moon Hill.

Niamh, after the food is ready, throws a handful of colored powder in the fire and begins to absently weave the smoke from it into a picture as she listening to the church bells.

Kiara thanks Niamh for the food with a flourish, then sits down to watch the picture!

Niamh finishes; a sketch of a dark-haired woman in a flowing robe at a pulpit, hand raised on high. It's unclear if she's inspiring or threatening.

Harrowhark says, "You could make decent coin busking with that trick if it weren't for your vows."

Kiara says, "Well, I mean... she's cute, but not to everyone's taste."

Niamh says, "My vows do not prevent me from earning coin. They simply prohibit some ways of disposing of it, and require me to tithe." She looks moodily at the picture for a second, gives Kiara an odd look, then waves her hand absently. The picture is smoke again, holding form just a second before wafting up an vanishing in the breeze.

Numo attempts to suck up all the smoke he can, then stumbles around, holding it in, for some unguessable purpose.

You hear distant sheep noises in various directions and a sort of banging noise south of you, as if someone was doing forgework or carpentry.

Harrowhark looks around for their bird of desire.

The bird flies over and twitters at Harrowhark.

Harrowhark says, "Let's be about our task."

The bird stands ready to lead you to more animals. Do you do that first or go looking for where the skeletons came from? (Which would require some kind of trackign method_)

For a moment, you think wolves are about to attack you but then you realize they are dead.

Drained of fluid and shrivelled up
