Harrowhark is in favor of going through the portal.
Kiara smacks her fists together. "You better believe it! Something this weird... it's gotta be cool, right?"
Kiara says, "I aint' ever seen something like this before, and Niamh has dragged me into some weird shit before."
Nuno points at Kiara, then waggles his ass at her, slapping each cheek.
Harrowhark says, "Things like this are not particularly difficult to set up if you have the resources."
Kiara points a finger back playfully. "Nunny, you ain't even in the top ten."
Nuno malingers.
Akio thought its name was Numo.
Voice of John Biles says, "Nuno is the proper name."
Voice of John Biles says, "But m is right next to n on the keyboard"
Frito says, "Hm, wiki says Numo."
Voice of John Biles says, "Huh. The sheet Mike did says Nuno"
Akio says, "Nuno is clearly Harrowhawk's familiar."
Manny Mo'Jac asks, "OOC Rod, is Sam going to weigh in on going through?"
Tobias says, "Actually... looking at it, the sheet says 'Nuno' AND 'Numo' in different places."
Tobias says, "So my bad."
Voice of John Biles asks, "Which one is right, Mike?"
Tobias says, "Numo."
Voice of John Biles exclaims, "Okay!"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC We need a third PC to say yes to y'all going through the portal."
Mike says, "OOC: Yes."
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Though I assume that's the plan."
Niamh adds her vote to going through the portal as well.
You all head through the portal; you hear Numo screaming and he tries to climb inside Niamh's robes. Just as you feel as if you might fall apart into chunks, you're inside a barbarian style long-hall. It's empty save for a skeleton sitting in a chair at one end of a long table flanked by two benches and set with dusty pewter plates, each with a small pile of rot. The king sits askew, as if perhaps he used to have things on him and has been stripped. There is a closed stone door on the far end and a portal just behind you. The Company of the Golden Spear is not here, but could be past the door.
Kiara pouts. "Dead skelly. Haven't seen those before."
Akio says, "I would like to submit a proposal, please."
Voice of John Biles asks, "To change your name to Elvis?"
Akio says, "It is almost certainly the case that adventurers in this world have some form of commonly understand "dungeon sign." Like "we were here and stripped this chamber" or "watch out, pit traps ahead" or "down this corridor is a pack of undead, we did not go that way but left them there" and suchly."
DaR From Another Place says, "Vendrik has been doing that the whole time."
Akio says, "And that by pre-arrangement if nothing else, the Company of the Golden Spear would have left that had they been through here."
Akio points at Dan.
Tobias says, "'Kind-hearted woman lives here' 'Mean dog'"
Frito says, "'Drunk-off-his-ass god'"
Voice of John Biles says, "Pre-arrangements require pre-arrangement. That being said, it's logical, so I will flip a coin. (Roll d2) On a 1, the Company bothered leaving signs. On a 2, no."

Whether deliberately or due to being mostly barbarians, the Golden Spear left no clues behind of thier fate.
Akio says, "Really should have thought of that last week."

Niamh says, "Let us press on through the door."
Harrowhark lets Vendrik and Luke proceed first.
Kiara heh's. "Move on out!" She does keep a close eye on the king's skeleton as they approach, to make sure it doesn't have any undead aspirations.
You press on through the door; there is a long hallway ending in another door; the hallway shows people hauling treasures. When you open the door, you hear Antonius trying to shout through the door to you but it's hard to hear; Wisdom check, DC 20; this is about hearing things, so any hearing related background is relevant.

Numo shouts something incoherent.
Niamh draws to an immediate halt at his shout, assuming it to be a warning.

Luke says, "He's shouting about pits."
Since you stop, Antonius now gets the door open.
Kiara also pulls to a halt.

He says, "The half of the hallway by this door is a pit trap."
Niamh says, "I assume the other half is safe?"
Antonius continues, "Once you reach the blue chest, it's no longer safe. It basically swings down when someone touches the area just by the door; we all jumped free, but I think some of you might not succeed."
Akio says, "... I'm confused."
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC THat's enough info for someone to make a Dex 15 + Background roll to disarm the trap."
Voice of John Biles says, "The half of the hallway by the fr door is a pit trap"
Niamh says, "'It'?"
Voice of John Biles says, "It triggers when you stand close to the far door, dumping everyone in that half of the hallway"
Antonius says, "The floor."
Frito says, "Sounds like it's Kiara's turn again, but may need healing if I blow the roll."
Akio says, "Okay. That makes more sense."
Akio asks, "Er, are you out of recoveries?"
Voice of John Biles says, "She has four recoveries"
Akio says, "Wow, okay."
Voice of John Biles says, "Out of combat, you can spend them by taking a few minutes to rest"
Voice of John Biles says, "Most of the party is at 4-5 recoveries"
Akio says, "Right, what I was gonna say is, when not in combat, and you have recoveries left, YOU are your own healer."
Frito says, "Right, but I'm down to 20 HP; if this is a nasty one, I could drop to half my HP."
Voice of John Biles says, "Niamh's actually at full recoveries"
Akio says, "You do not need the healing of others."
Akio says, "Then Niamh may be a recovery battery. :)"
Frito says, "Anyway, let's see how it goes."
Kiara cracks knuckles. "Well, let's see if this goes any better than the last one." She sets to work on the trap mechanism.

Kiara strolls down towards Antonius. "How's things going for you guys otherwise?"
Beyond, you find a room with a BUNCH of chests of various colors. Most of them are now smashed open, but the red, orange, yellow, green, and blue ones remain untouched; these are wooden chests. Everyone roll Wisdom; this is not a trap, but it is about noticing things. DC 20.

The walls are decorated with images of the gods of barbarians, like Crom, Maeb, Avandra, Istus, and Gruumsh.
Antonius says, "If you can pick locks, which none of us are fluent in."
Niamh shrugs. "Barbarians confronted with locks they have no key for react is a highly predictable yet often effective way, Harrow."
Jean says, "These things break easily."
Vendrik gestures at the wall between Crom and Maeb. "Secret door here, maybe for escaping, but maybe for ambushing intruders, yes?"
Akio says, "I hate these guys already."

Antonius says, "Wait, there's a secret door?"
Jean says, "Secret door?"
Vendrik says, "Of course, is secret door. Cultists, kings, humanoids. All think alike in end. Wanting to flee without being caught, or wanting to catch by surprise."
DaR From Another Place shoots them in the knee.
Ribbet now curiously licks Crom; this does not open the secret door, but does please the giant frog.
Crom is, of course, uncaring.
Kiara goes over to examine the door herself.
Now that you know it's there, it's easy to open it.
Manny Mo'Jac asks, "OOC I assume you open it?"
Niamh says, "Well, let us open these chests and then follow this secret door."
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Opening the chests is DC 15 with Dex + Thievery"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Go for it, Travis"
Kiara nods, then turns back to the chests, obviously distracted by the shiny. "Loot! Woot!"

Kiara discovers tht ancient barbarian locks are not her thing.

Kiara throws up her hands. "I mean, yeah, it makes sense, but it's so unprofessional."
Frito says, "Yup."
Manny Mo'Jac asks, "OOC Rod, do you want to take a shot?"
Luke pops his claws and takes a shot.

Luke pops the five chests open.
Niamh says, "How useful."
Luke says, "You grow up around security when you grow up in a dragon's lair."
Niamh looks to see if the chests hold lovely, lovely money.
You collect 6 10 GP Opals, 240 silver pieces and 3000 CP; that's 1 10 GP Opal, 40 SP, and 500 CP for each of you.
Kiara eyes Luke appraisingly. "Dragon's lair, hmmmmm?" She smiles, looking a little predatory.
Luke says, "Granny was disappointed I ended up a paladin but I heard the song of Heaven and had to answer." He shakes his head and sighs.
Kiara shakes her head too. "Yeah, I can see that."
Frito says, "'Poor Granny.' ^_-"
Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC That should be 2400 SP and 400 SP for each of you, sorry!"
DaR From Another Place says, "I see John rolled a 1 on his math."
Mike asks, "OOC: Wait, what?"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC You each get 1 10 GP Opal, 400 SP and 500 CP"
Mike says, "..."
DaR From Another Place says, "His reroll did not help."
Mike says, "Is that your final answer? You've given three different ones. ^^;"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Yes."
DaR From Another Place asks, "So the total loot in the chests was 6 opals, 2400 silver, and 3000 cp, so we each net 1 opal, 400 silver, and 500 copper?"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC I said 240 SP instead of 2400 SP, which divides up as 400 SP each"
Voice of John Biles says, "Yes"
Vendrik will happily exchange his share of silver for opals if Harrow or others wish to do so.
Akio asks, "Silver to gold is ten to one, right?"

Akio says, "If Vendrik has 700 SP he can have ALL my opals."
The secret door opens easily; a voice begins speaking. In some ancient language. After a few seconds, there is a tang of magic in the air and the voice changes to modern Common. "You have located a secure area under the authority of the Archamage. Unless you know the password, please close this door and go away and forget you ever found this. Otherwise, the security beyond will try to deal with you." You see a short hallway and stairs down. The message then repeates.
DaR From Another Place says, "Sadly, I do not. I could do 4 though."
Harrowhark says, "It's a good thing this isn't a secure area under control of the Archmage."
Harrowhark says, "That might be worrisome."
Akio says, "You know what, let's work that out in town rather than during the session."
Akio says, "Not like we're gonna be spending anything right at the moment."
The Company of the Golden Spear confab with each other, then Antonius says, "We've got enough treasure to be happy; we're going out. We can wait a while to see if we need to inform your next of kin if you want to go in, though."
Harrowhark says, "This must be the tomb that the later complex was built around."
DaR From Another Place exclaims, "GIB VENRDIK SPARKLIES, LITTLE BONE GIRL!"
Harrowhark says, "We are; the responsible thing to do is find the source of that terror aura."
Kiara says, "Not to mention seeing just what the heck is down there." Her curiosity bump is almost visible.
Ian Macready says, "Probably we should just bury this place. But if you're sure you want to go in, we'll wait here for two days and if you don't come back, we'll assume you're dead and see about sealing the place."
Akio says, "So basically, these assholes got themselves trapped, we freed them, they stuck around long enough to get some loot and not fight, and then vamoosed."
Tobias says, "John, I have to point something out here, as I don't know if this is a plot point or a GM-forgetting thing."
Voice of John Biles says, "You also used them as trap testers."
Voice of John Biles says, "Fire away, Mike."
Tobias asks, "This is supposed to be a First Age tomb, yeah?"
Voice of John Biles says, "Yes."
Tobias says, "There isn't supposed to have been an Archmage until the Third Age, when the first Archmage basically overthrows the Cabalist and steals their mojo and position."
Voice of John Biles says, "I do have to note that they rewarded you for rescuing them."
Voice of John Biles says, "That's me forgetting, Mike."
Voice of John Biles says, "Consider it third age, then."
Tobias says, "Okay."
Okay, so y'all going to go down the hallway and down the stairs?
Harrowhark is in favor, yes.
Niamh says, "Very dangerous, but potentially much to learn."
Niamh says, "Very well."
You head down the stairs.
The voice continues to warn you.
But cuts out as you get halfway down the stairs, with a final 'Pray to your gods, then.'
Niamh says, "Hmph."
Harrowhark says, "I don't understand why the ancients always felt the need to be so cryptic."
The stairs lead down to a five foot wide ledge over a thirty foot drop into a thirty by thirty foot floor below; the floor is covered with gold coins; a wooden board sticks out over the lower floor for about seven feet.
Vendrik snorts. "Is bait. Big bait for very dumb adventurers. Is good the others left."
Harrowhark hefts a rock and prepares to experimentally toss it down, if nobody stops her.
Kiara says, "They ain't exactly the sharpest tools."
Kiara looks at the board. "...but damn if I ain't tempted to try a fancy dive off that plank." She looks at the others, then blinks. "Not gonna do it, of course. But wouldn't that be cool?" She adjusts her tricorn hat.
Harrowhark tosses a rock down into the pit.
The rock falls thirty feet; it scatters a few coins revealing more coins.
Nothing else happens.
Harrowhark says, "Even if that were real gold... which it might be... what would happen is that you'd die."
Kiara shrugs. "There's a trick to walking the plank. You just gotta know the trick."
Niamh asks absently, "Spell, creatures under the gold, or just counting on the fall do you think?"
Harrowhark says, "The gold could BE a creature."
Luke says, "Being the archmage, I would expect a spell."
Vendrik says, "Usually creatures when touching. Under gold, teleporting in, summoned. Matters little enough."
Harrowhark says, "Let's negotiate the traverse."
Niamh nods.
Luke says, "Negotiate a what?"
Harrowhark says, "Cross the bridge, Luke."
Kiara asks, "OOC Just to be clear, that's not a bridge, that's just a plank sticking out into the room, right?"
There is not an actual bridge; the board sticks partway out, but not to the far side, nor is there any obvious exit
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC It's just a plank."
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Rather like a diving board like Kiara said."
The only obvious exit from here is back up the stairs.
Akio says, "You said there was a five foot wide ledge OVER the gold."
Voice of John Biles says, "Oh yes, but it doesn't go anywhere."
Voice of John Biles says, "The stairs come down to the ledge"
Tobias says, "It's like a balcony, Merc."
Voice of John Biles says, "From there, you look down at the gold"
Voice of John Biles says, "Yeah, what Mike said."
Harrowhark asks, "Niamh, can you life up some of the gold?"
Harrowhark says, "OOC: lift up"
Niamh says, "If by some, you mean a few coins, yes, I believe so. That may set off any spell that attends it, though. Possibly on me. If this was engineered by an Archmage, he will not be baffled or foiled by the use of a cantrip."
Niamh says, "I am willing to attempt it if there is no better plan, though.
Harrowhark says, "We have to do something if we aren't going to turn around. Getting some of the gold to examine seemed logical to me. "
Harrowhark says, "We could rappel down, but that seems like a very bad idea."
Kiara says, "Other thing I can think of is taking a pole and poking around in the coins."
Distantly, you hear Ribbet ribbetting, then getting hushed by his rider.
Niamh says, "Very well. Please stand by to heal me if need be." She sets herself firmly, and attempts to bring up two coins from the floor.
Akio asks, "You got a thirty foot pole, Travis?"
Vendrik says, "Let us not stand on ledge when already seeing falling floor traps."
Kiara's eyebrows go up, and she looks at the others, then silently shifts her eyes from them to the stairs, then back again.
Frito says, "Possibly. Kiara's got a wood elf tent, which presumably uses poles to hold its shape; we could potentially tie them together."
The two coins float up to Niamh; the coins depict Antonio I Machine-Breaker; they're very fresh and unused.
Voice of John Biles says, "You could try to rig up a thirty foot pole from your tent."
Niamh, rather than touching them herself, has them float down to the stone of the ledge for examination.
Voice of John Biles says, "Dex + Background, DC 15"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC If you want to study them, Wisdom or Intelligence + an appropriate background."
Kiara tries assembling the poles from her tent into a 30-ft pole. "If this breaks, the party's paying for a new set," she grumbles.

Niamh sees brushmarks on the coin, as in, the ones left by paint brushes.
Kiara waits to see the results of Niamh's investigation before poking around with the pole.
Niamh hmmms. "These appear to be some sort of common metal painted with gold paint."
Niamh says, "Deceptive, but not perhaps deadly."
Kiara nods. "Figures. Bait."
Akio asks, "Can you send Numo down into the pit, Mike?"
Tobias says, "Nope."
Tobias says, "There's no real way for him to get down."
Frito says, "Actually, there is; he could climb down the pole."
Akio asks, "Er. Gravity?"
Akio says, "Gravity will get him down real good."
Voice of John Biles says, "Numo is not going to throw himself off a cliff. He isn't that obedient."
Akio says, "We don't even need the pole, I brought a rope."
Akio says, "We could lower him down."
Tobias says, "I also don't want to abuse the 'invulnerable familiar' thing by using him in place of us for a potentially deadly situation; IMHO that would be an abuse of the spirit of the mechanics."
Voice of John Biles says, "Yeah."
Frito says, "Good point. Well, Kiara will start poking with the pole if no one objects, though she'll want backup if something tries to pull her in... in fact..."
Kiara ties a rope around her waist, then hands the other end to Vendrik and Luke, in case something tries to pull her in when she starts prodding. Then she starts probing with the pole.
Tobias says, "It wouldn't surprise me if the 'floor' is just wax paper over spikes or some such."
Frito says, "Yeah, though I suspect something more active."
Poking with the pole displaces a few coins but nothing else happens; some thumping shows the coins are packed tight enough/on something stable but hidden under them that a person would probably find the surface slick and easy to fall on but it wouldn't swallow you up.
Frito says, "I doubt they went to all this trouble baiting a trap just to kill adventurers, unless they were protecting something else."
Harrowhark says, "At least one of us is probably going to need to go down there."
Akio says, "I nominate a rogue."
Kiara nods. "Right. Sammy? You got any roofrunning experience?"
Niamh asks, "Is there anything down there aside from fake gold and a slippery floor?"
Niamh says, "Otherwise I'm unsure of the point."
Vendrik says, "One secret door already. Almost certainly another."
Harrowhark asks, "We've checked the ledge, yes?"
Kiara says, "Well, that's the question, ain't it? Seems like a lot of work to lure people in just to kill them."
Harrowhark says, "This could be the top of a switchback, there could be a door in the wall to the right or left."
Luke nods. "I have to assume that they wouldn't just lay the dead guy's body on that floor and cover him in coins."
Niamh says, "I was about to say."
Niamh has a sudden thought, and proceeds around the rim of the ledge, prodding the empty air around it with the tip of her staff.
Harrowhark says, "Oh, the invisible bridge."
There is nothing but air and the ledge.
Harrowhark says, "A classic of dungeon design."
Akio asks, "Can the rogues check the near wall for doors if they haven't already?"
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Searching the ledge and the stairs and entry hall for secret doors is DC 15; active searching, you can use Wisdom or Intelligence + a relevant background, DC 15"
Harrowhark says, "roll 1d20+8"
Result is: (1d20+8) 20 for Harrowhark
Mike says, "OOC: I'm going to active search with straight int."
Mike says, "roll 1d20+5"

Frito says, "And yeah, this feels like a real flaw in the system, at least to me. Searching for traps is a traditional Rogue thing, but WIS is a stat rogues are not encouraged to take."
There might be something down at ground level in the pit, but there's nothing up here.
Akio says, "Let's tie a rope to Luke and send him down."
Niamh says, "Kiara, I'd like you to try something with your pole."
Kiara asks, "What you got in mind?"
Niamh says, "Poke around the floor just past the far end of that diving board and see if it's of a different consistency."
Kiara nods. "I'll give it a shot."
Kiara strides out to the end of the board, then starts prodding again.
Kiara goes and pokes around there; it seems the same as everywhere else.
Kiara comes back. "No change that I could find."
Harrowhark says, "This COULD be an elaborate mage prank."
Vendrik says, "Or it hungers for flesh of living."
Luke says, "It's possible there used to be more than the board and it broke at some point in the past."
Akio once again proposes the send Luke down plan.
Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll 1d2"

Niamh says, "That's easily checked." She casually casts Mending on the board.
The board now looks shiny and new but is no bigger than before.
Niamh says, "I'm fairly sure jumping off will do SOMETHING, but I and dubious it is something GOOD."

Frito says, "There is one more thing Kiara could try doing if it comes to a 'battle' - if she goes down there and starts prodding, and something strikes at her and makes it an official battle, she could use her power to teleport back up to the ledge."

Tobias says, "True."
Akio asks, "Doesn't the power specificy it has to be someplace she could move to normally?"
Akio says, "So unless you can scuttle up a thirty foot rope in one round..."
Kiara looks at the plank again and shakes her head. "Whoever set that thing up doesn't know their planks. No spring to it at all."
Voice of John Biles says, "It's just a location you can see"
Voice of John Biles says, "And she can see the ledge from below"
Akio says, "If you're talking about Shadow Walk you are wrong."
Frito says, "Yeah, the exact text of the racial power is 'Once per battle as a move action, place yourself in a nearby location you can see.'"
Akio says, "Oh the RACIAL power."

Akio says, "Yeah, that'd work."

Kiara claps Harrow gently on the shoulder. "Good eye."

Harrowhark takes out her crowbar and starts trying to find a seam.
Frito says, "Rogues are normally Dex and Cha, and I put some points into Con for survivability."
The paint and the wall cracks; it looks like the painted over area is made of glass; a bit of scraping reveals there is funky multi-colored light beyond but you can't see anything but a blur.
You can try a Dex or Str 15 check to basically pull the pane out intact, or you can just smash it up automatically with the crowbar but that wills catter broken glass around.

Harrowhark scrapes coins away from the floor and examines it for signs of false flooring or a trigger mechanism or anything.
Akio says, "My concern now is that yanking the pane will flood the pit with doom light or something."

Scraping is hard because coinds keep flowing in but there's no sign of any kind of trigger mechanism or way to easily open it.
The glass goes down about one inch below the surface of the coins and has stone under it.
Niamh ponders this.
Akio says, "I say I head back up to the ledge and Kiara pops the pane."
Frito says, "Sounds reasonable, though I'd like our Magic expert to evaluate it."
Akio says, "Well, Mike can certainly have a look."

Kiara waits for Harrow to get back out and the others to stand away from the line-of-sight for the opening, then stands to one side and starts carefully prying out the glass.

The fear is strong enough here that if any of you drop to 15 HP or less, you cannot use the Escalation Die and you are Dazed (-4 to hit) until healed up above 15

Niamh goes around to the wounded. She doesn't actually HEAL them, but she DOES cast Mending on their now-slime-sodden armor and clothing, rendering it freshly clean.
Samantha mutters, "Hate slimes."
Manny Mo'Jac asks, "OOC Vendrik 9 Kiara 8 Harrow 26. Any of you want to burn a recovery?"
Kiara says, "OOC Um yes? :)"
DaR From Another Place says, "I guess I can't be too mad. Vendrik kept pretty much everyone but Kiara from taking damage, which is basically his job. Still, bit hallow."

Dark ominous music plays, followed by... a giant picnic basket full of food appears. It appears to be made out of silvery scales and is loaded with cannisters of soup and loaves of bread. It has a note from Luke's Granny to Luke, which he reads and gives everyone the food.
Tobias says, "Dicebot shall always hate the one who gave it life... cursed, agonizing, unending life."
Kiara bliiiinks. "Cute basket, Luke." She gives him a sly grin. "Granny, huh?"
Secondly, there is a box, wrapped in paper with a bow with Vendrik's name on it as part of the basket.
Niamh says, "..."
Harrowhark says, "I don't. I don't understand what is happening."
Everyone will be able to camp here and refresh yourself with the food despite this being a terrible place for resting.
Vendrik eyes Luke, and then the package, and then Luke again.
Niamh says, sounding slightly disturbed, "This does not appear in any of the sagas or histories."
Luke passes the box to Vendrik. "Looks like Granny finally remembered your birthday."
Kiara asks, "Hey, Nimmy, I think we ought to keep this one. Think if we sandwich him, he'll stay?"
Vendrik accepts the box and then opens it carefully.
Sniper Ox says, "fading"
Niamh says, "I BEG your pardon, Kiara?"
It contains three blue dragon scales, each with a rune etched into it; these are +1 Runes, p. 284)
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC I want everyone to go ahead and roll their icons, then we'll quit for the night."
Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC But this will help me prepare to work them in for next time."

Niamh says, "You certainly don't know me THAT well!"
Kiara laughs and pats her on the shoulder. "I know you well enough to get a rise out of you like that!"
Samantha mutters something about slime killing the mood
Niamh says, "Hmph. Amusing." There is a certain sullen tone in that voice that promises petty, petty revenge.
Kiara grins back cheerfully, she can deal for the sake of a good joke or two!
