Episode 15: In search of a Living Dango ^H^H^H^H^H^HDungeon

You are HANGING TOUGH in the Priestess' temple

You have slept and now where are you off to?

Harrowhark says, "The Priestess recommended we consult Ioun's clergy."

Samantha says, "guess we'll go have a word with the clergy then."

Kiara shrugs. "Cool with me."

Niamh says, "We should do that, then. I would also like to take time to consult the archives here, afterwards."

Harrowhark says, "Perhaps we should do that first? Less walking."

Niamh says, "Very well. Although there will likely be tolerably little for most of you to do."

Vendrik says, "Then we will consult, and then have words."

Harrowhark says, "I think I can occupy myself in an enormous holy archive, Niamh."

Kiara grins. "I'll just hang out looking pretty and making the archivists nervous."

Niamh says, "As you will."

Luke says, "I should see if they have the latest installment of Holy Paladin Galager."

Niamh heads down to the... archives!

Which is a wind novel about a paladin's adventures.

Kiara tags along with Niamh!

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Okay. If any of you want to research something related to holy things, you can make an appropriate roll, DC 15, but add +5 because this is a rich vein of information. If you score 20 or 25, you'll find out more."

Vendrik waits, the way soldiers on campaign, or in seiges, have learned to wait.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Historical or Santa-Cora related things also get the bonus."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll d20+11"

Result is: (d20+11) 19 for Manny Mo'Jac

Luke finds his wind novela nd sits down to read it.

Kiara looks for the theological view on the High Druid.

Kiara says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 14 for Kiara

Mike says, "roll 1d20+4+4+2+5x2"

Result is: (1d20+4+4+2+5) 35, crit (1d20+4+4+2+5) 32 for Mike

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC You can add your level as well, Travis."

Kiara says, "OOC Which puts me over the top for a basic score, at least."

Niamh says, "Interesting. The Stone Thief apparently has its own cult."

Niamh says, "The Cult of the Devourer. There's some evidence that they can mark a place to be targeted by it."

Harrowhark says, "That's... terrifying."

Harrowhark says, "Also potentially useful."

Harrowhark says, "We should acquire this curse or hex for our own uses."

Kiara says, "You gonna volunteer to seduce it out of 'em? Cause I decline."

Harrowhark rolls her eyes.

Niamh seems unsatisfied with what she finds. "I could easily spend months in here, yet we do not have months, and this is all I can find with merely a quick search of the low-hanging fruit."

Niamh says, "Let us proceed onward to the priests."

Kiara asks, "What'd you look for that you didn't find, huh?"

Okay, going to the Temple of Istus, then?

Harrowhark exclaims, "OOC: Seems like!"

The Temple of Istus somewhat resembles a giant Loom, for she is the weaver of fate.

The priests dress in simple grey togas with mysterious symbols in white and black.

As you enter, they are singing a hymn to Istus, who weaves the fabric of history, so that everything makes sense, so that the sun rises and stars fall and the wind blows and the sea knows its place.

You end up delayed twenty minutes listening to hymns, then an acolyte comes to you. "Your coming was foreseen, foes of the Stone Thief. Come with me." He turns and heads off through a side door from the main worship area.

Kiara says, "..."

Niamh follows.

Harrowhark accepts this with equanimity.

Kiara says, "OK, that's just creepy." But she follows along anyway.

Vendrik says, "Prophecy has been busy worker."

He leads you past twelve doors, matched in pairs, then into the thirteenth, which is decorated with paintings of events of this age. There is a central low table made of obsdian, and seven chairs around it, three on each side and one at the head, where a woman sits, middling in age. She doesn't look like Niamh in detail, but she has the same hair, eyes, and skin tone. Her hair, however, is piled up in this huge bun which resembles a three-tiered ziggurat, pinned with a silver pin.

Samantha says, "I see prophecy dabbles in paint."

Six cups of green tea sit on individual cups and one cup of black coffee at the priestess' place. Seven silver plates, each with two hot loom buns. (Like a hot cross bun but with Istus' holy symbol)

Harrowhark sits down at one of the places and sips her tea.

Samantha paces around looking at the art

Kiara bends over and sniffs the steam thoughtfully, then sits and takes a sip. "Not bad."

Vendrik looks dubiously at the teeny tiny little chair, before perching on it in such a way that he can avoid a tumble if it is not up to holding his bulk.

Samantha says, "roll 1d20+2+3+2"

Result is: (1d20+2+3+2) 22 for Samantha

Niamh sits and sips the tea.

The priestess says, "My name is Hermione. I am a distant scion of the Emperors of the Sixth Age, but there is something in the vicinity of two million people closer to the throne than I am." She smiles a little, glances at Niamh, then says, "Your arrival here is, of course, fate. We are all part of the weft and woof of history."

page> Akemi [to you]: You reoognize your father in one of the paintings, though he's a tiny part of a huge horde of nobles at a major tournament, which may well be where you were concieved.

page> Akemi [to you]: But you can make out his heraldry

Niamh says, "Ah. The Sixth Age."

Hermione says, "But of course, many small things are not fated. I am drinking this coffee because I prefer coffee to tea."

Niamh says, "Are you certain that is not fated?"

Hermione says, "Your choice of wehre to go next is your own free choice, yet some events draw you. Part of what you seek lies in Moon Hill still, waiting you. But as to what you seek now, there are many living dungeons where I foresee you are more likely to succeed than die horribly."

Kiara says, deadpan, "Oh good. That's very reassuring."

Niamh says, "What is it that waits in Moon Hill?"

Hermione says, "The Dire Wood is Dangerous but there is a giant hollow spider rampaging there with a dungeon inside it. The sewers of Glitterhaegen connect to the Slime Lair, which is disgusting but which I foresee victory for you. And the Death Tree of Ming the Deadly is actually rather less deadly than it claims, in the Bitterwood, though that has its own dangers." She turns to Niamh. "In the Red Hand Tower, you can find the Room of Mirrors, where you can speak to yous who were and weren't and might have been."

Hermione then begins eating one of her hot loom buns.

Kiara looks warily at Hermione, then picks up a loom bun and bites into it herself. Her eyebrows shoot up. "Heeey, not bad." She takes a bigger bite.

The bun is warm and tasty with sugar and raisins

Niamh says, "I do not recall anywhere in Moon Hill named 'Red Hand Tower'. Is that the name of part of the crashed fortress of the Archmage?"

Harrowhark writes down some notes.

Hermione says, "I do not know but I know of the fallen fortress, so I expect the answer is yes."

Hermione says, "But also, there are warded areas in Moon Valley and it may be in one where the wards broke."

Niamh nods. "I will see if ancient records name it."

DaR From Another Place says, "I like the sound of Death Tree of Ming the Deadly."

Hermione says, "Good luck with that." She sips her coffee and waits for any more questions.

Akio says, "Death Tree of Ming the Deadly sounds solvable with fire."

Kiara asks, "So aside from you guys, who else has their ear to the ground on this?"

Harrowhark says, "Explain why the 'Death Tree' is not as deadly as the name implies."

Hermione says, "The Diabolist, the Orc Lord, the Three all may bring this age to a catastrophic end if things go ill."

Hermione says, "It is a Death Tree in the same way that Vendrik's blade is a Death Sword, able to bring death but not guaranteed."

Hermione says, "This isn't like the Death Mouth of Al'gazar'hazgak', where you were just jumping into a demon lord's mouth and then he devours you."

Kiara makes a face. "Greaaat. Just what I always wanted, having a bunch of dragons on our case."

Hermione says, "He ate over 1000 adventurers before someone broke the gateway."

Hermione says, "The Death Tree was one of those things young Drow make."

Hermione says, "Where you iamgine a giant rampainging engine of destruction and you get something that can't move fast enough and just wants to putter around the forest, eating passing people, instead of tearing down Elven civilization."

Kiara says, "...oooh. OK, that's cool, then."

Kiara says, "Young Drow are always like that."

Kiara says, "In fact, I wonder... nah, she's got worse naming sense than that."

Hermione says, "The Bitterwood is somewhat dangerous but not as dangerous as the Dire Forest, where all the Animals are Dire Animals."

Vendrik says, "Slime Lair sounds easiest, but having done enough trenches, am not looking forward to boots wet with worst than just mud and water."

Harrowhark says, "We could go to Glittarhaegen and make a decision there."

Harrowhark says, "It's convenient to two of these infernal architectures."

Niamh makes a face. "I do not wish to begin my career with 'the slime lair'," she says distastefully.

Kiara asks, "Yeah. You know how hard it is to get that stuff out of your clothes after?"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "Luke says, "Gliterhaegen is the best place to get the latest wind novel releases.""

Hermione says, "Since you will be in the area, you could try bargaining with the Prince of Shadows for information, though that can be... risky."

Hermione says, "His actions cannot be foreseen, so I can not tell you if visiting him would be good or ill."

Vendrik nods. "Slimes and Trees both near there. Dire Wood, maybe after."

Kiara says, "Trusting him's a mug's game."

Niamh says, "I dislike rolling a random dice unless I have no other choice."

DaR From Another Place says, "ooooh, meta-burn."

Harrowhark says, "Well, where would you like to go, Niamh? You're smarter than most of us."

Niamh says, "This is true." She thinks. "I believe the Bitterwood. The slimes do not fill me with enthusiasm, and the Dire Wood is said to be the more deadly of the two."

Kiara claps her hands. "Works for me!"

Harrowhark says, "This is acceptable to me."

Vendrik nods absently.

Samantha says, "don't care for slimes either."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC You can get cabins on a boat straight to Glitterhaegen for 50 GP each. (That's at 1 SP per mile)"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC So take that out of your cash."

Akio asks, "Mike, can you do the thing? The thing where you bargain and then the dice betray you?"

Sniper Ox says, "hm. i'd clearly forgotten to track my cash. i only have 76 GP"

Niamh attempts to Do The Thing.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Okay, make a Cha + Pilgrimage Traveller, DC 15 check."

Mike says, "roll 1d20+1+4+2"

Result is: (1d20+1+4+2) 20 for Mike

Mike says, "OOC: Also, before we go, I leave the 250 SP pouch I got from Magrus with the priests of Istus to catch me up on my tithes."

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Okay!"

You are able to argue the captian down to 30 GP each by offering your services to protect the boat.

Niamh pays her fare.

Kiara pays as well!

Samantha pays up begrudgingly

Vendrik pays the thing, and prepares for boat travel.

Harrowhark does as well.

You get ready without trouble; the estimated travel time is one week if all goes well.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll 1d20"

Result is: (1d20) 18 for Manny Mo'Jac

The Midland Sea typically has strong but steady winds, a fairly sunny sky and right now, it's HUMID AS HELL during the Summer

The first three days of the trip are pretty peaceful; the wind blows the right way, no rain, making good time. You and the other passengers all enjoy yourselves; this isn't a luxury boat but it's comfortable. If you don't mind having yellowtail EVERY NIGHT.

Usually with vegetable mush and hardtack.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Merc, roll me 2d6, Mike roll me 1d6, please."

Harrowhark says, "roll 2d6"

Result is: (2d6) 7 for Harrowhark

Akio says, "I'm sure this has nothing at all to do with our Icon dice or that we have to pass by Necropolis."

Akio says, "Nothing AT ALL."

Voice of John Biles whistles idly.

Harrowhark says, "roll 1d20+9"

Result is: (1d20+9) 16 for Harrowhark

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll 1d6"

Result is: (1d6) 3 for Manny Mo'Jac

Harrowhark says to the others, quietly, at breakfast, "Liches are angry with us."

Samantha says, "always something."

Vendrik asks, "'Us'?"

On Day 4, the sky is overcast with clouds and everything has a kind of grey sheen to it; the ship's priest goes to the front of the ship and begins basically praying continually; everyone is told you're passing 'near' Necropolis, though it's too far away to be seen.

Harrowhark says, "We're in this together, Vendrik."

Breakfast is a hearty pork stew, though you see signs there will be yellowtail AGAIN tonight.

Harrowhark says, "Although technically I suppose it is just Niamh and I."

Vendrik says vaguely philsophically, "Us is a many thing. We at the table is us, we on the ship is us, we on this sea is us."

Luke says, "All for one and one for all, as my order says."

Kiara asks, "Besides, how many people are liches not angry at?"

Harrowhark says, "I've offended the Lich Queen somehow." She says, bitterly, "Maybe my father is courting her. Or whatever liches do."

The daytime goes peacefully but you can feel the tension in the air slowly rachet up; everyone's limb hairs begin standing up and there's that feeling like there's going to be lightning.

Anything you want to do during the day before any trouble happens?

Harrowhark makes sure her valuables are in a chest that floats. Just to be safe.

Niamh takes the precaution of posting watch-sprites along the rails to sing out if something starts trying to climb over the sides.

Vendrik ensures that the breakaway latches on his armor are all in working order.

Kiara also puts her stuff in something safely watertight and floating.

Luke polishes his weapons and armor and wanders the deck, watching for trouble.

That evening, after dinner, after sunset, Niamh's alarm-sprites freak out, howling warnings.

This ruins any chance of surprise.

In fact, it means you can position yourselves for a free round of missile fire before they can close.

You face two kinds of foes:

Three shambling things made out of a mixture of cords, bits of weaapons and armor adn bones, tied together with metal wires, wearing 10th age insignia, and five spectral warriors, wearing intact but ghostly versions of the same gear the automatons were made from.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Shamblers are 20/16/13, ghosts are 18/16/12"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC The free round, I will just go down my PC list, then we'll do init."

Luke spits lightning at a shambler, then throws a javelin.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll d20+6x2 2d6+6 2d8+6"

Result is: (2d8+6) 17 (2d6+6) 16 (d20+6) 15 (d20+6) 24 for Manny Mo'Jac

page> Akemi [to you]: These guys form up like 10h Age soldiers, which you remember from your tactical studies. That probably means the light troops on the left and the heavy guys on the right; so you can choose whether to be blocking shamblers or ghosts by positioning yourself

Samantha says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 24 for Samantha

page> DaR [to Akemi]: Shamblers are the heavies?

page> Akemi [to you]: Yeah

page> DaR [to Akemi]: Then I will be in their faces and on thier cases.

Your foes come forward in an oddly formalistic way, the shamblers forming on their right and the ghosts on the left and moving together in lockstep to present a unified front. This puts Vendrik facing the Shamblers, Luke facing the ghosts and Harrowhardk in the middle, facing both.

As they advance, Samantha goes before they reach your line, then Harrowhark; the rest of you will go after them.

Samantha, you can could shoot them or close for melee.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC OR do a hit and run with Tumbling strike."

Samantha targets the same shambler as before with a tumbling strike

Samantha says, "roll 1d20+3+2+1"

Samantha says, "roll 1d20+5"

Result is: (1d20+5) 8 for Samantha

Samantha is unable to get out of reach as quickly as she hoped.

Harrowhark, whatcha going to do as they come for you?

Harrowhark holds her action until after they close to melee range.

Your foes approach; one of the ghosts begins to sing a song; it's a Battle Hymn of the 10th age; a shudder goes through them all and then a woman's voice speaks through them. "Harrowhark, we know what you think you are doing! It will not succeed! Your soul will go down into the dark as it deserves!" The voice is all echoy and disturbing as lich voices usually are. Then they strike. BUt since you held your action, you can strike JUST before they attack.

Harrowhark continues to hold her action.

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Okay, then!"

Kiara looks at Harrowhark. "...ooookay, then, they really are after you. Wow."

The Shamblers strike with blades at Vendrik

Harrowhark says, "It's complicated."

Niamh says curtly, "That was the Lich Queen."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll d20+8x3"

Result is: (d20+8) 14 (d20+8) 19 (d20+8) 13 for Manny Mo'Jac

Harrowhark says, "Yes, Niamh, I gathered."

Two of the shamblers... vanish, passing through the deck and out of sight; the third hits Vendrik for 10 points. He is now at 34 HP

The injured Shambler is one of the two

Niamh says, voice quiet and slightly mocking, "Harrow, sometimes I think you forget that you are not the only one I am speaking to whenever I talk."

Two ghosts lash out at Harrowhark.

Manny Mo'Jac says, "roll d20+7x2"

Result is: (d20+7) 23 (d20+7) 22 for Manny Mo'Jac

Harrowhark goes now.

Kiara!

Kiara asks, "OOC So we've got one shambler left on Vendrik, one spectre dead, so how many left on Harrow, and are any left on Luke?"

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC One spectre on Harrow, three on Luke."

Kiara makes a tumbling strike on the spectre on Harrow (who IIRC is also the main injured one?)

Voice of John Biles says, "The injured one just died at Harrow's hands."

Frito says, "Right, but you said her hit injured a second one."

Voice of John Biles says, "Oh, yes."

DaR From Another Place says, "'passing through the deck'"

Akio says, "If I were you, Mike, I'd tuck RIGHT IN to one of the tanks."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC Two of them phased through the deck."

Akio says, "Because I suspect the shamblers be coming back for ya."

Manny Mo'Jac says, "OOC One is alive and in front of Vendrik"

Niamh leaps up onto a crate!

Manny Mo'Jac exclaims, "OOC Vendrik!"

Vendrik lays in the confused shambler with a solid strike d20+7 2d10+5, then orders Harrow to Stand Firm in the line.

Result is: (d20+7) 23 (2d10+5) 17

Akio says, "... wow."

Niamh and the crate go flying over the side. As Niamh arcs up into the air, she gestures with her wand and intones, "Pfeatherfall." Her trajectory up starts to go down... only rather than a plunge, it's a slow, slow drifting down just off the rail, like a feather wafting in the wind.

Kiara, it's your turn, then Niamh, then Vendrik.

Akio says, "classique, Mike."

Kiara makes another tumbling strike on the spectre she's facing.

Voice of John Biles says, "Yes"

Niamh time!

Frito asks, "And since swashbuckle is a quick action, can I use it to sweep Niamh back onto the deck?"

Voice of John Biles asks, "How exactly are you going to sweep her out of the ocean onto the deck?"
